What Does “JK” Mean?
Many people try to find some meaning behind the Jeep Wrangler’s letters “JK.” Many vehicles have acronyms that help identify something special about them. The old CJ series of Jeep translated to “civilian Jeep,” so positively, “JK” has to mean something crucial about the Wrangler.
Sadly, the JK letters have no real meaning. These letters are an internal engineering code as opposed to abbreviations or initials. Luckily, when you customize your next Wrangler with EAG CDJR of Carthage, you can give those letters any significance you’d like.
How Can You Tell if a Wrangler is a JK?
While you’d like to think that any Jeep Wrangler purchased after a specific year would be a particular model, it’s not that easy. If you have a 2019 or 2020 Wrangler, then it is a JL edition, as the JK edition production ended in 2018.
The JK model hit the scene in 2007 and stayed on the market until part-way through 2018. That’s right; in 2018, you could have purchased a JK or a JL. The only way to tell which one you have is by comparing the differences between them.
What is the Difference Between a JK and JL?
There are five significant differences between the Jeep Wrangler’s two most recent models. The first three can help you identify the difference while only looking at the Wrangler’s exterior. If you can peek inside, the last two items make the difference abundantly clear.
The Front Grille: While the JK and JL have similar grilles, there are some subtle differences. The JK has a flat grille with a narrow space between each grille opening. The Jeep logo is chrome and placed right above the grille. You’ll notice a kink in the grille on the JL model, with wider gaps between each grille opening.
The Fender Vent: The JL model introduced a small vent right behind the front fender flares. These vents produce more significant airflow into the engine compartment.
New Fender Signal Lights: The most modern rendition of the Wrangler has signal lights on the front fenders. The JK model placed its signal lights under the headlights.
Backup Camera: Backup cameras are pretty standard on newer vehicles. It wasn’t until the JL hit the street that the Wrangler had a built-in backup camera on the spare tire. You’ll also notice the new UConnect system.
Push Button Start: Although many vehicles built in the last few years come with a push-button start, the JK never had this option. The JL was the first Wrangler model with a standard push-button start.
What’s The Best Wrangler JK Model Year?
Technically, there isn’t a “best” year for any of Jeep’s models. Many drivers love well-worn JK models built from 2007 to 2010. Since Jeep Wranglers stay on the road for quite a long time, these older versions of the JK often come with an appealing price tag.
Others would go for a 2018 JK since these options would have fewer miles but still come at a discount versus the newer JL version.
